Health issues with Northern Inuits

The Northern Inuit is like many large breeds and can suffer from Hip Dysplasia (HD). To help lower the risk of HD, all Northern Inuit Society breeding dogs born after 1st January 2006 are to be hip scored and a satisfactory score reached before being bred from. The mean average with the BVA has gone down progressively for the last 3 years and is now 15.

Measures are now also being taken to avoid any eye or elbow problems appearing in the future. All Northern Inuit Society breeding dogs born on or after 1st January 2009 are now to be elbow scored and BVA eye tested for Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) and Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA).
